We’re at the end of our long, hard journey on the back roads of our life. Most of us turn back to easy street by now, but if we never take this trip, life’s curves will be hard.
We’ve driven down the roads of Motives, Fear, and Grief – this week Mistaken Thinking. Or better yet, Stinkin’ Thinkin’!
Mistaken Thinking can creep into our lives unconsciously, often at an early age. We can be taught something born out of someone else’s insecurity, prejudice, or ignorance. These are viewpoints we have internalized and play over and over in our minds. Our thoughts about ourselves can also derive from our culture, from what the world says we should do, what we should be, or how we should look.
Stinkin’ Thinkin’ says, “I don’t fit,” “I’m not good enough, skinny enough, pretty enough,” “I’m unworthy of love,” “Don’t trust anyone,” “I need to look out for #1,” “Never give up control,” and “My past will cripple my future.” These are roadblocks that stop us dead in our tracks.
The overachievers play a reel that has us believing “Complete a task at any cost,” “God loves me only if I’m productive,” “Good works will get me into heaven,” “I’m superwoman,” “I must overcompensate for my lack,” “I need to save or rescue people,” and “Manipulation works.” These are thoughts that make us do things that are exhausting.
How many of these thoughts are true?
My friend, absolutely none of these are true! Stop playing these lies in your head! Replace them with what is true, what is real, and what serves those around you. Because they, too, are sick and tired of you believing these inaccurate, deceitful, distorted, fabricated, fictitious lies!
Pastor Mike Whitney of Church of the Shepherd (COS), shared a message that what we believe determines how we act. An exercise in sin is to believe all other voices than God’s. Colossians 1:22 (NLT) tells us “I am holy,” “I am blameless,” “I am without a single fault.” REPEAT. Christ took our mistaken thoughts about ourselves and left them on the cross!
Surrender these roadblocks! Believe the truth. Get on with your life. Today.
